“Too many consumers are buying high octane gas thinking it is a ‘treat’ or a ‘treatment’ for their cars,” said Karen Finkelstein, Assistant Director of the Consumer Protection Agency. “But, the fact is, the consumers are the ones getting the treatment, not the cars,” she added. “Now, Ready Gas will join the Consumer Protection Agency to get the word out to consumers: Unless the owner’s manual for your car calls specifically for high octane fuel or your engine is knocking, there’s no reason to pay for premium gasoline,” she advised.

In June of this year, the Consumer Protection Agency filed a complaint charging Ready Ga with making unfounded advertising claims about the ability of Ready Gas gasoline to clean engines and reduce automobile maintenance costs. As part of an agreement to settle the charges, Ready Gas agreed to air a twenty second television ad featuring a Ready Gas official saying, “Normally cars run properly on regular octane, so check your owner’s manual and stop by Ready Gas for this informative pamphlet.” This law enforcement remedy will not only set a precedent but will also save consumers money.
