A sentence Grammatically speaking, a sentence is a group of words that has a subject and predicate. More importantly, however, a sentence is an expression of an idea. Sentences can be one word long or one paragraph long – the only true common element is that the listener gets information The subject The subject is the person , place or thing that the sentence is about. It is the most important thing in the sentence. A subject is usually a noun, pronoun, or noun clause. The subject is usually followed by a verb. The verb The verb in the sentence describes the subject or describes the action of the subject. The verb must “agree” with the subject in number (if the subject is singular, the verb must be in the singular form) and in person (I, you, he, she, it etc.) EXERCISE 1.1 Sentence analysis In each sentence, underline the subject once and the verb twice.
