THE HEINEMANN TOEFL COURSE
PRACTICE TEST 4
READING
PART 4 (Questions 29-37)

line 5
The dancer's source of information is kinesthetic sense. A dancer begins by
looking at the body's parts and their most elementary kinetic functions.
Knowledge and feeling of the body's parts need to be built up; the message
network of muscle, bone, nerve, brain, judgement (and its reverse) needs to
become efficient, reliable, and increasingly sensitive. From this basis dancers

line 10
develop style and technique in their movements.
To have technique is to possess the physical expertise to perform whatever steps
a given work may contain, be they simple or complex. Some dances may contain only
the most elementary steps. Choreographers influenced by Minimalist art or
by the stripped-down productions associated with the experimental Judson Dance

line 15
Theater of the 1960s have put together dances that consist of nothing but such
basic actions as walking or running. Anyone who can walk or run for the duration
of those pieces therefore possesses the necessary technique to perform them.
If technique is the ability to perform steps, style refers to the way steps are
organized and shaped, both by the choreographer who has invented them and by

line 20
the dancers who perform them. Many things can affect the style of a work: for
instance, the historical period and geographical locale in which it is set and the
social status of its characters. The style of an abstract dance may also be
determined by a choreographer's predilections: Some choreographers are fond of
lyrical movements, whereas others prefer sharp/ glittering steps. Individual

performing styles may be influenced by such considerations as a dancer's
temperament and the way that the dancer habitually accents or times certain
movements on stage.

ANSWER KEY
29. Ð’   The correct answer is (B) because paragraph two of the passage describes technique and paragraph three describes style. The relation of the two aspects of dance is stated in lines 14-16:  If technique is..., (then) style...

30. С   The meaning of "kinesthetic" and "kinetic" can be deduced by looking at the context of the first paragraph. Key words are dancer, body parts, functions , and in the last sentence, from this basis..iп their movements. The correct answer is (C) movement.

31. B    Clues to the meaning of "put together" are found in the context of the topic of the paragraph, which is choreographers creating dances and dance steps. We infer that to "put together" a dance is to create it.

32. C   The phrase "those pieces" refers to the noun phrase... dances that consist of nothing but such basic steps as walking or running (lines 11-12). The dance is referred to as a piece, as is often the case in artistic contexts.

33. A   The correct answer (A) can be inferred from these passages in lines 8-12: Some dances contain only the most elementary steps. Lines 10-12 state: the experimental Judson Dance Theater ... that consist of nothing but such basic actions as walking or running.

34. D  The correct answer (D) can be arrived at checking the context in which the word "work" is used. In the immediate sentence: many things can affect the style of a work: for instance... and in the next sentence: The style of an abstract dance may also be determined.... We can infer from this context that a work has style, and that style is being discussed in relation to dance. The main point in this paragraph is that dances are organized and choreographed. (A), (B), and (C) are not logical replacements in this context.

35. A   The meaning of the word "set" can be inferred from the context in the sentence ... the historical period and geographical locale in which it is set and the social status of its characters. We deduce that the historical period and geographical locale provide the background for the style of a work (lines 16-17). In this context, answer choice (A) presented is closest in meaning to set.

36. C   Clues to the meaning of "predilections" are found in the sentence following the word, which gives examples of a choreographer's predilections: Some choreographers are fond of lyrical movements, whereas others prefer sharp, glittering steps (lines 19-20). We infer that "predilections" are what someone likes, or prefers, to do.

37. A   The correct answer is (A) because the choices (B), (C), and (D) are mentioned in the passage: (B) in lines 20-22; (C) in lines 18-19 (the word predilections is similar in meaning to preference); and (D) in lines 16-18.
